Description
I found a beautiful piece of Black Walnut at an off-cut sale at a local company that makes high end bespoke staircases.
I used most of it to make some keepsake boxes, but as an experiment made one car, bus and truck from it. Very pleased with how they turned out; really solid, super weight, and a fantastic grain under two coats of wax/oil finish. A very special toy.
I experimented with different shades of stain for the wheels but eventually decided that the contrasting natural birch (with the same wax/oil finish) was best.
The car went to a new home quickly through word of mouth – to be a new dad gift. “Absolutely love it! Even better in real life!” was the message from the customer. But bus and truck are now available here. There is only one of each, and they are only available on this website.
Dimensions. Overall 105mm long x 60mm high x 55mm wide. Wheels are 38mm diameter by 12mm wide. The body itself is 25mm thick.
While not high gloss, the finish on these is smoother and shinier than my other toys that get one coat of wax/oil to protect them while maintaining a tactile wood effect. To be clear, although this was new, unused, untreated wood when I bought it, I don’t have a PSFE/FSC chain of stewardship as I do with my regular wood supplies.
Made using the same template and methods as the Oak and Sapele Mahogany buses I have more commonly on sale, and using the same CE certified finish and glue, this Black Walnut bus is also CE certified safe to EN-71 standards.
